Media and Politics

The Huffington Post

The Huffington Post is an online news agency that is known for its left leaning news content. A look at their website shows that they favor liberal views over conservative views. One might even say that they are anti-establishment. In many ways, the Huffington Post cannot be called an unbiased news agency. This is especially true with its articles that cater to the left side of the political spectrum.

Upon perusing its website, one can immediately see the strengths and weaknesses of its political coverage. A strength of the Huffington Post is that it focuses on a wide variety of news topics from politics, showbiz, sports and even technology. However, a weakness of the political coverage of the Huffington Post is that despite covering a wide variety of topics, majority of the news articles found on their website focuses on liberal political views. This then leads us to an evident partisan bias in their news coverage. Their articles often attack the political establishment, especially when their actions are deemed anti-liberal. For example, their articles often attack various aspects of Trump’s actions. In the current headline, they are calling attention to Trump’s appointment of his son-in-law to the Whitehouse. Their articles may be informative, but there are times when they border on sensationalism. As such, they call attention to issues in such a way that can offend conservatives.

The Huffington Post is often favored by those who have a liberal view, which makes their content limited when it comes to informing citizens. One way of looking at the news source is that it caters a certain type of audience who already has set political views. To those who are on the other side of spectrum, they are biased, while those who sit in the middle will find themselves with information that can lead them to a more left leaning and liberal view of politics.

Breitbart News

Breitbart News is a website that is known for its conservative and right leaning news articles. In fact, one can even call it the opposite of the Huffington Post. Breitbart readers form part of what we know as the conservative part of America. Their readers are those who espouse traditions and go against those who they believe are against keeping those traditions alive. Just like the Huffington Post, they cannot be called unbiased because their news articles often call out liberal views and show support for conservative politics.

In terms of strengths and weakness, Breitbart is similar to Huffington Post, because it caters to conservatives and the right end of the political spectrum. In this respect, liberal views are not seen in their websites, aside from the fact that when they do appear, they are being criticized. This then leads us to the conclusion that they there is indeed political bias. In fact, many of their articles promote a positive view of Trump. However, a peculiar aspect of their political coverage is that their articles have a more conventional tone that does not border on sensationalism. This is understandable because the readers are conservatives who want a news website where they can find articles that accommodate to their views.

Breitbart News does not provide a substantive political coverage that can inform citizens. It is a website where conservative and right leaning writers and reporters can have their articles published online. This then means that the readers are of the same political view. So if a reader who does not have well-formed political views reads Breitbart, they will be ultimately influenced to favor a less liberal and more conservative political point of view. A reader who is looking for unbiased news is better off reading other news websites.
