Devi(L) Movie Review
Brief Summary
Krishna is a young working-class Tamil man currently based in Mumbai. He is of marrying age and is looking for a “modern woman” to marry. However, when he visited his hometown in Tamil, his family forcibly married him and Devi. She is a typical village girl, far from the modern girl he had always dreamed of having as a wife. Left without a choice, he brings her to Mumbai and rented an apartment for them. To his surprise, Devi changed tremendously, acting like a modern woman and calling herself as Ruby. It turned out that his wife is being possessed by Ruby’s ghost. She is the original owner of the apartment. She was an aspiring model who committed suicide. Still being possessed by Ruby, Devi managed to acquire an acting stint for a movie. Ruby and Krishna agreed that after the shooting, she would leave Devi’s body. In the process, Krishna starts to appreciate and love Devi as she is. However, Ruby betrayed Krishna and refused to leave Devi’s body. Yet, she eventually agrees to do so when they found out that Devi is pregnant with Krishna’s child. In the end, Krishna and Devi live happily as a family.
Opinion
I find the move to be very good and entertaining. All of the actors are exceptionally good in portraying their respective roles. The mix of romance, comedy, and horror also lives up the hype set for the movie. There is no dull moment, except for the long transition before the climax. The first 20 minutes of the film seemed to be too long for an interlude for the actual plot. Nevertheless, the narrative rapidly picks up as soon as the main conflict of the story is exposed. The warm ending is also exceptional compared to other horror-comedy films we have seen. I would definitely recommend this movie for others to watch.
